The client contacted North East Door Systems with the purpose of allowing a patient safe access to an outdoor space with zero contact with staff members. After a detailed survey and meetings with the customer there were some very specific requirements when considering the design of the door.
The design considerations were:
- Allow staff to accommodate access to outdoor space for the service user without staff having to come into direct physical contact.
- Minimise the need for persons to access the door & the ‘in-head’ components.
- Minimise ligature points & ability for service users to harm themselves or others.
- Withstand reasonably practicable vandalism.
The door type chosen was a single automatic swing door with a glazed side panel operated by an in-head direct drive motor.
Due to the highly bespoke nature of the design no standard components could be used, each was either a new design or existing parts were intricately machined to suit the in-head design.
The door not only secures on closure but also on opening, fitting into custom fabricated shrouds and securing on hold open maglocks energised during the opening sequence. Reinforced steelwork, high rated glass and anti- pick silicone added to the safety features of the door, along with no protruding fixings or parts. Consideration went into the location of the door programmer to minimise the need for room access to complete maintenance and keyed operation ensured that only trained users could operate the door.
This was a challenging project but North East Door systems, working closely with the client were able to overcome the logistics and intricate design.
The installation process had to be timed to suit a wider programme of works (whilst the patient was temporarily re-located). Works were completed within the programmed time-scales and handed over to the client along with dedicated O&M’s.
