North East Doors Systems (NEDS) were recently chosen by Hilton Garden Inn, Sunderland, to replace the hotel’s problematic revolving doors. Regularly breaking down, causing issues with access along with expensive part replacements, Hilton Sunderland needed a sustainable and easy to maintain solution which was both cost effective and high quality.

“We put the job out for tender and no other companies could meet the tight time frame. We already had a pre-existing relationship with the guys at North East Doors so we made the decision to go with them.”
The scope of works was to install a lobby area spanning both inside and outside of the existing building façade with bi-parting automatic sliding doors to either end of the newly formed lobby. Clever planning and project management enabled completion from start to finish in 6 days. NEDS also organised the electrical works and emergency lighting, fitted temporary flooring, installed the flat roof and suspended ceiling, and coordinated the cement mixing to back fill the old revolving door.
With the hotel being situated next door to one of the UK’s largest football grounds, the Stadium of Light, the team had to turn the job around before thousands of football fans passed through its doors on a busy Sunderland AFC match day.
North East Door Systems had ample in house resource to ensure the job was completed on time, minimising disruption to guests and maintaining security throughout. The works were planned in such a way as to ensure a constant air seal and security, by installing the internal lobby, ceiling and door set prior to the removal of the revolving door.
The installation of the sliding doors has massively improved the reliability of the system, leaving less room for error and breakdowns. The lobby was designed to allow for a delay in the sensors being triggered, minimising the loss of a permanent air seal, and helping to retain the hotel lobby temperature.
North East Door Systems (being an independent company) were able to select from a wide range of manufacturers. On this occasion the two key factors were aesthetics and reliability. With flush mounted sensors, slim profile frames to the leaves and frameless pocket screens the high-quality Swiss made Gilgen product was the perfect solution. The design was not only significantly cost saving, but modern and elegant too.
Director of North East Doors, Andrew Brown commented, “We’re really proud of this project and we are delighted with the finished article. The job ran exactly to programme with minimal disruption to site which is a credit to our teams prior planning and project management”.
“We’ve worked with the Hilton Sunderland for a number of years now, and our priority was supplying a functional, aesthetically pleasing solution whilst making sure trade wasn’t affected – both of which we managed to achieve”.
“The day after completion, the doors were opened and closed over 2000 times, which really highlights why it was critical this project was completed on time and to the very highest of standards.”
Mr Pyne, who was thrilled with the outcome, said: “We wanted something that was aesthetically pleasing for the hotel, and it very much looks the part”.
“The guys have done exactly what they said they would and turned this around within a week and I certainly can’t argue with that. One week ago, the front of the hotel was a building site, now it’s like a normal day at the hotel.
“Overall, it was a professional job, and we are extremely grateful for the hard work and energy from the North East Door Systems team.”
